Mission
The mission of the Salt Lake City Open Space Lands Program is to
preserve and enhance the quality of life throughout Salt Lake City.
What is "Open Space"?
Open Space Land is defined by ordinance as a parcel of land in a
predominantly open and undeveloped condition that is suitable for 1)
natural areas 2) wildlife habitat 3) important wetland or watershed
lands 4) greenway or stream corridors 5) small neighborhood parks
and community gardens, and 6) trails and paths for non-motorized
recreational activities.
Funding
This
program creates the opportunity for granting funds for the
acquisition of land, conservation easements, development rights, and
other means of preserving open space.
This funding opportunity currently has
$4.7 million to be used as a match for acquisition or conservation
easement purchases.
Open Space Advisory Board
The City’s Open Space Advisory Board facilitates the acquisition,
management, promotion, preservation, protection and enhancement of
open space land.
Accomplishments
Open
Space Lands funding has been used as a match with Salt Lake County
Open Space Trust Funds to purchase 58 acres of open space above the
Capital Building including portions of the Bonneville Shoreline
Bench and 12.7 acres of property near the H rock on the foothills of
the east bench. Additionally, Salt Lake City Open Space Program
worked with Wasatch Community Gardens to purchase the 4th East
Community Garden, located at 553 South 400 East.
