Energy Conservation

Buildings and Municipal Operations

In 2001, Salt Lake City changed all the lighting at the City and County building to compact fluorescent bulbs and higher efficiency grounds lighting. This action not only reduced the demand for energy from coal fired power plants, but saved taxpayers over $33,000 per year.

Salt Lake City also has a phased program to convert all of the traffic signals to LED lights. When this project is completed savings from the LED conversion will equal over $50,000 per year.

Former Mayor Anderson has also issued an Executive Order requiring that all city owned and operated new construction or major renovations be LEED Silver Certified. This will ensure that Salt Lake City is building and maintain innovative high performance buildings which have less impact on occupant health, energy demand and the environment.

Renewable Energy

Salt Lake City Government

By reinvesting a portion of the savings from energy efficiency measures, Salt Lake City became the largest single purchaser of Blue Sky wind energy in the State of Utah. Our purchase is equal to a greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 796 tons of eCO2

Salt Lake City Community

wind Nearly 4% of citizens and businesses of Salt Lake City purchase wind power. The national average is only 1.4%. The combined effort of Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake City Community is the pollution prevention equivalent of taking 2,700 cars of the road each year.

Support clean energy by purchasing renewable wind energy through the Utah Power Blue Sky program.

For only $1.95 per 100 kilowatt hours of wind power you'll help create a cleaner, safer, more balanced energy supply for today and tomorrow.
